Heart Health

February is all about love, cupid-inspired gifts, and keeping your heart healthy. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women, so American Heart Month is meant to encourage and motivate people to practice heart-healthy behaviors like eating healthy and exercising in their daily lives.

Being that Dr. Bharat Sangani is a practicing cardiologist (and he has been for 30 years!), he wants to celebrate this month by sharing his best tips to keep your heart healthy. Since 1982, Dr. Sangani has specialized in diagnosing, monitoring, and treating diseases or conditions of the heart, blood vessels, and the cardiovascular system.

Check out a few tips for keeping your heart healthy below.

Join the “Life is a Business” Mentorship Program

Dr. Sangani is passionate about not only keeping people healthy but also teaching them how to achieve ultimate happiness. He recently started the “Life is a Business” mentorship program, which provides a curriculum curated to help you become your happiest self through the three pillars of health, wealth, and wisdom.

As the first pillar of the 12-month program, the “health” section of the mentorship focuses on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle over time. Part of this is incorporating heart-healthy foods into your diet and doing consistent cardiovascular workouts. Throughout the “Life is a Business” program, Dr. Sangani’s clients will set both short and long-term nutritional and fitness goals as they learn to take care of their bodies, and most importantly their hearts, while on the path to happiness.

Make Sure to Get Enough Sleep

As much as you may want to stay up late watching Netflix or scrolling through your phone each night, hitting the hay at a decent hour is essential to long-term heart health. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), lack of sleep has been linked to health concerns and issues, such as high blood pressure and heart disease.

If poor sleep continues over a long period of time, it can also lead to unhealthy habits that can hurt your heart like high-stress levels, lack of motivation to exercise, and making unhealthy diet and lifestyle choices.

Get Moving and Sit Down Less

We all know how important exercise is to our health, but it can be easier said than done to actually do something about it. Start simple with the intention to sit down less throughout your daily life. If you sit at a desk every day for work, set reminders throughout the day to get up, stretch your legs, and go for a short walk around the block. When you’re not at the office, work your way up to the recommended 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise and 2 days of strengthening workouts per week.

Learn Your Health History

The first step to heart disease prevention is understanding your already existing risks. Do some research and reach out to family members to get a better sense of your family’s health history. Bring anything you learn about during this process to your doctor so they can recommend the necessary precautions and lifestyle changes you may need to live a heart-healthy life!
