Inner Happiness is Everything

Inner peace and happiness are not just for monks or yogis living in the mountains, meditating all day. They are for everyone, for all of us.

We all deserve happiness. It’s our birthright. But, as a society, we have rewired our brains to think that we need someone else to make us happy, we need to have money or a particular job or something other than ourselves to be happy. And, when we don’t get these things, we start feeling sad and discouraged.

Ask yourself, when you think about happiness, what’s the first thing that comes to your mind? Family, friends, money, or something similar? While this is entirely acceptable, inner happiness is something that comes from inside, something that resides within us.

Inner happiness doesn’t rely on external factors. Just like every device has a default setting, internal happiness is our default mental setting. No, it’s not always active. At some point in life, we all feel sad, angry, or stressed, and that suppresses our default setting temporarily.

Some don’t have a stable income, others have health problems, and more have a less desirable place to live than most of us. And yet, many in these circumstances are happy. Why? It’s because they have realized that life doesn’t happen to you; it happens for you.

So, it’s all up to you. If you want to feel sad and downtrodden about all the outside factors that life has thrown your way, and use that as an excuse to choose self-pity, you can. Or, if you want to accept your circumstances happily and focus on the larger part of the life, you can revert to your default setting.

I’m no stranger to the harsh things life throws at us. I know how easy it was for them to take over my life completely. I struggled with depression for almost a year before I realized that inner happiness is everything and that I could have it if I wanted it.

After working on myself, I learned that having a high sense of self-worth is all you need to lead a happy life. You don’t need anyone else to be happy; you just need yourself.

Where do I start? How do I change my thinking?

If you find yourself asking where to start, then let me tell you, the first step toward finding inner happiness is releasing the accumulated emotional baggage that you have been carrying to this point.

No matter what you’re going through in your life, you have the option to keep the feeling as it is, or you can change the way you feel about it.

When you choose to stay where you are and let your situation affect your life negatively, you will play a victim of life forever. But once you decide to change the way you feel about it, that’s when you will find inner happiness.

If you suspect that’s easy to say but hard to implement, then let me tell you that you’re right. It is hard to turn your life from negative to positive, from depressed to uplifted. But I know that you can do it, because I have done it, too. Remember, you’re solely responsible for your happiness. No one else can create it for you.
